Macramé Earrings

Macramé is the art of tying knots without any hooks or needles. In South America, the Argentines and Peruvians are considered the best at macramé, but we've picked up a few tricks during our travels.

Although not commonly used, macramé is a great technique for making earrings. The end result always has great movement thanks to the weaving's flexibility.

All of these earrings are woven with super-strong Brazilian "Fio Encerado," a polyester blend originally created for leatherwork. In addition to never fraying or unraveling, the thread also does not fade for years, literally, and regardless of how much sun or water you expose it to -- Roberto's been wearing the same Fio Encerado anklet for five years and it still hasn't worn out.

Earrings with Salvaged Glass

These earrings are made with glass scraps from the factory floor. They're all irregularly shaped, and were punched with holes to be re-sold as beads so that they wouldn't have to be thrown in the trash. Who knew recycling could be this fun -- or beautiful?

All earrings are 2 5/8" long, not including the ear wire.

Earrings with Lágrima de San Pedro Seeds

These earrings are made with Amazonian seeds called Lágrima de San Pedro, or Saint Peter's Tears. They're a bit difficult to work with when it comes to drilling holes and making them into beads, but their great shape and variety of colors make them essential for any Ecuadorian artisan. We especially love them in earrings because they're so lightweight!

All earrings are 2" long by themselves, 3 1/2" long including the earwire.
